Whether
you are leaving on a short business trip or on an extended vacation, your
canine companion needs to be looked after. And not just looked after, but
looked after well.
If you're
on the fence about leaving your pooch with a pet sitter (either professional or
someone you know) we've made a list of 9
reasons to have a pet sitter for your dog that may help you make an educated
decision.
1 - More One-on-One Time
Even
though boarding facilities do try to spend time with each dog they house,
depending on the occupancy, your dog may not get a lot of one-one-one time.
However, if you have just one person to one dog, your pooch will most likely be
spoiled.
2 - Less Chance of Contracting an
Illness
If one
dog gets sick in a multi-housing situation, then there's a good chance your dog
could, too. The common "cold" that humans get (called kennel cough
for dogs) is highly contagious and does have the potential to spread throughout
a boarding facility. Keeping your dog at home with a pet sitter is one way to
avoid this doggy flu.
3 - Pet Sitter Doubles as a House
Sitter
This
point is especially true if you have someone stay at your home with your pooch
while you're away. Break-ins are common in this day-and-age and burglars know
the signs to look for when the home is temporarily vacant. Your live-in pet
sitter will be an obvious presence in your home. Plus, you'll get your plants watered and mail
brought in, too.
4 - Can Watch for Illnesses
If your pet
needs medication on a daily basis or you're worried he may become ill while
you're away, a pet sitter can administer the meds and look out for any signs of
sickness. Be sure have your vet's name and number handy and some cash available
just in case your sitter needs to make an emergency vet visit.
5 - Less Boredom
Dogs tend
to get bored if they're left in a kennel all day. A good pet sitter will walk
and play with your dog daily to help keep her mind and body active. This is
especially important if your dog is very attached to you and tends to suffer
from separation anxiety.
6 - Happy Dog
A happy
dog is a healthy dog. Letting a pet sitter tend to your dog's every need while
you're away will keep your pooch feeling fine. In fact, he may not even care
that you're gone (that's a good thing).
7 - Can Stay in it's Own Home
Moving a
dog to an unfamiliar location (such as a boarding kennel) can be very stressful
on your canine companion. When a pet sitter stays in your home, your dog's
environment stays the same, which will reduce any excess anxiety.
8 - Professionals Follow the
Rules of the Trade
If you
hire a professional pet sitter, these people are trained in this line-of-work.
Often times they will be bonded and will have a written contract for you to
sign so you know exactly what to expect from the pet sitter.
9 - Peace-of-Mind
Leaving a
beloved fur baby behind can be stressful for us; however, if you leave Fluffy
in the capable (and perhaps even familiar) hands of a pet sitter you can enjoy
your time away without worry.
Pet Sitting is a Plus
Whether
you drop your dog off at "grandmas" or you hire a professional pet
sitter, your dog will be much happier in his own home, or in that of a person
he already knows and loves. Don't stress out on your next vacation or business
trip, get a pet sitter so you can leave with peace-of-mind and assurance that
your beloved fur baby is being well taken care of.
